In the story "The Adventure of the Norwood Builder", the villain plants a thumbprint to further incriminate the innocent suspect. I was amused to catch Doyle out in a minor technical blunder. At the end of this collection Watson says that Holmes has now gone into retirement subsequent stories in the series had to be fit into the existing timeline. So Holmes gets to return from the dead after about three years, almost giving poor Watson a heart attack. The "return" in the title refers to the fact that Doyle had tried to kill Holmes off in the previous story, in the famous incident at the Reichenbach Falls.
